The Glimmer Challenge

I have recently been listening to the audiobook ‘Befriending your Nervous System’ by Deb Dana which is all about the role our nervous system plays in wellbeing.

In it she talks about glimmers.

Glimmers are little moments of life that spark feelings of energy, joy, warmth, connection, curiosity, and happiness.

These small, day to day glimmers are all around us but can be easily missed, especially in the busy and stressful lives we lead.

If you have watched some of our videos, especially our video ‘Responding to Thoughts‘ you will know that the human mind evolved to be threat focused. This means we naturally pay more attention to negative experiences than positive ones.

But if we can recognise these little moments, or glimmers, and actively choose to stay with the positive feeling they bring us, we send a powerful signal of safety to our nervous system which is essential for our wellbeing.

We all experience glimmers but it’s easy to take them for granted, skip over them and move on to the next thing, without getting the benefits our nervous systems need.

So we thought it would be a great idea to start a glimmer challenge

To take part all you have to do is notice when a glimmer happens for you, savour the experience of your glimmer, then take a quick snap and share what inspired your glimmer moment using the hashtag #glimmerchallenge.

In her book, Deb Dana says that once we get used to looking for glimmers, we will find more of them and they will become a more predictable part of our lives.

And don’t forget to tag us – it would be amazing to see what sparks glimmers in all of your lives and hopefully, by seeing other peoples glimmer moments we can be inspired to find and connect with more glimmers of our own.

Please share this article (our our social media posts) with your family and friends and invite them to find their glimmer moment
